Week 1: Death, Decay and Decorum

A new semester and a new studio; This time around – Death, Decay and Decorum.

I am very excited for things to happen in this semester like burying clothing, dissolving clothing and making a MAGAZINE (which is my most favorite part! I had so much fun creating a book last semester that I can’t wait to do it again)

Initial research……..

Cultural Investigation: Burials

My research begins with Cambodia… not a traditional burial of any sort but after travelling through South East Asia at the beginning of the year I have wanted to learn more about the Khmer Rouge regime.

And have chosen the heavy topic of mass burials to start off with…..

Visiting Tuol Sleng and the Killing Fields was intense to say the least, the idea of a mass grave scares the hell out of me and walking along one in Phnom Phen was totally mind blowing.

Almendra and I are looking at mass burials together – she is looking at natural disaster and I am focusing on genocide, specifically the Killing Fields.

These two types of mass graves have different reasons and politics behind the motives but they also have some similarities.

Key words to think about during my research:

Unidentifiable

Systematic

Community

Mass

Uniformity
