What about a funeral?

Mass Burial: Although this is not a conventional grave or burial ceremony I believe the grieving and ceremonial practices are continuous, forever. The Killing Fields is a place that people visit and pay respect to daily, both people of Cambodia and foreign. The funeral has taken place after the event, and has become a large part of the lifestyle and tourism of Cambodia.

1st Garment Idea: The Chain Doll

britishwomenartists.co

While madly trying to figure out a way to create a garment through research into mass killings I have focused on systematic dressing, genderless and uniform like – there is no ownership in this piece. I also am looking into the idea of a continuous garment… like the grieving process; it is continual throughout Cambodia and will be a part of history.

  • I want this garment to be timely, which matches with the idea that is it continual throughout history.
  • And then I came up with the ‘community dress’
  • The garment allows everyone to be equal
  • The garment is continual like a CHAIN DOLL
  • The garment is genderless
  • This garment is bleak in colour
  • This garment is ‘mass made’
  • This garment is a one size fits all
  • This garment has lining…..

Each part of the garment has a different lining – different textures and textiles which is like a hidden personality which is not seen by the outer community.

Hopefully this will work.. or get me started at least!

Week 1: Death, Decay and Decorum

A new semester and a new studio; This time around – Death, Decay and Decorum.

I am very excited for things to happen in this semester like burying clothing, dissolving clothing and making a MAGAZINE (which is my most favorite part! I had so much fun creating a book last semester that I can’t wait to do it again)

Initial research……..

Cultural Investigation: Burials

My research begins with Cambodia… not a traditional burial of any sort but after travelling through South East Asia at the beginning of the year I have wanted to learn more about the Khmer Rouge regime.

And have chosen the heavy topic of mass burials to start off with…..

Visiting Tuol Sleng and the Killing Fields was intense to say the least, the idea of a mass grave scares the hell out of me and walking along one in Phnom Phen was totally mind blowing.

Almendra and I are looking at mass burials together – she is looking at natural disaster and I am focusing on genocide, specifically the Killing Fields.

These two types of mass graves have different reasons and politics behind the motives but they also have some similarities.

Key words to think about during my research:

Unidentifiable

Systematic

Community

Mass

Uniformity
